SLC Camp Detailed Schedule
A typical day at Blue Sky will look like . . .
9:30 am: Group Meeting in the Gore Concert Hall (Jewett Center): Music Show-and-Tell, Announcements etc.
9:45 am: Technique Class & Repertoire Class. Here is where you will work on your playing skills with other players of your primary instrument. Topics will vary by instrument, but might include topics like “Irish Ornamentation” or “Belting” or “Picking Patterns” etc. This is also a time set asideĀ to try new things. If we do our job right, you will leave Blue Sky having tried at lest a couple new styles and a whole bunch of new techniques.
11:00 am: Choir (Singers Study an Instrument): Instrumentalists will spend this time working on a large group vocal number like “I Am a Man of Constant Sorrow” or “Bohemian Rhapsody.” During this time, vocalists can either stay or take a keyboard or guitar class.
11:30 am: moNet Master Class: Sponsored by the “Music Opportunity Network,” this time aside for working on our creativity. Topics might include, “How do I Write a Song” or “How do I Arrange an Existing Song to Make it Interesting?” Everyone should leave Blue Sky having written part or all of a song or tune (or both).
12:30 pm: Lunch.
1:30 pm: Band A. Each student at Blue Sky will play in two bands (an A Band and a B Band). Half of this time will be coached. The other half will be rehearsal time with you and your band mates. Each band will have a chance to work on two songs, one assigned by your coach, and the other of your own choosing. You will perform one of these songs at the Friday concert.
2:30 pm: Rhythm Class. Rhythm is one of the most fundamental elements in music . . . and one that gets neglected too often. This time will be spent working on a group number as well as a variety of general rhythm skills. Some years you will work on an actual drum like the Djembe. Some years we do a percussive voice or clapping number.
3:00 pm: Band B.
4:00 pm: Summerhays Second-Instrument or Open Jams (your choice). This is a chance for you to try a second instrument. Summerhays Music sponsors this part of Blue Sky. They also provide a number of instruments for you to try or purchase. Harmonica and Penny Whistle are both popular classes.
4:30 pm: Personal Practice.
5:00 pm: Dinner Break.
7:00-9:00 pm: Evening Activity.
